A 57-year-old woman walking near the University of California at Berkeley campus early Thursday morning was assaulted and robbed, UC police said. The woman, who is affiliated with the university, was walking near Berkeley Way and Oxford Street around 5:30 a.m. when the suspect grabbed her from behind, police said. The suspect was armed with a gun and demanded the woman’s money. When the woman said she didn’t have any cash the suspect hit her either with the gun or his hand, police said. The woman fell to the ground and the suspect grabbed her purse and fled. He was last seen running west on Center Street, police said. The woman suffered minor injuries and declined any medical attention. Police searched for the suspect but could not find him. He is described as a medium complexion black man between 30 and 35 years old with black hair. He was standing about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed about 150 pounds. He was seen wearing a black jacket and dark pants. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call (510) 981-5900.
