Two men were arrested on suspicion of shooting a 14-year-old student with a BB gun at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley on Wednesday, police said. At about 11:55 a.m., police responded to a report of a BB gun shooting at the track field at Tamalpais High School on Miller Avenue. The student was doing physical education on the track field of the high school when a metal BB pellet struck him, police said.

The suspects were driving southbound past the track field in a blue BMW sports utility vehicle. A black man leaned out of the vehicle, holding what appeared to be a machine gun, and fired shots at students on school property, police said. The victim was taken to Marin General Hospital via ambulance. He sustained a moderate injury to his lower back, according to police.

Mill Valley police officers and Marin County sheriff’s deputies located a vehicle matching the description provided by witnesses in Marin City within minutes and detained the occupants of the vehicle. The suspects were determined to have been involved in the assault and were arrested, police said. Police arrested Demarqus Wiggins, 21, and Sel Butler, 18, in connection with the shooting.

They were arrested for possession of a weapon on school grounds, felony battery causing injury, willful discharge of a firearm, and conspiring to commit a crime, according to officers. Police recovered guns matching the witness’s description. The firearms were loaded with BB-type metal projectiles, according to police. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
