A man was arrested today in the homicide of a woman whose beaten body was found alongside a road outside Salinas in 2008, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s deputies took Miguel Rafael Alfaro-Rivera, 25, into custody on suspicion of murder at 8 a.m. today with the assistance of the Monterey County Narcotics and Violent Crimes Task Force, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies arrested Alfaro-Rivera in the death of Shawna Elaine Marquez, who was found dead beside Zavala Road outside Salinas on Nov. 27, 2008. An investigation and autopsy determined that Marquez died from blunt force trauma, deputies said. Evidence was collected that connected Alfaro-Rivera to the killing and officers served search warrants prior to arresting the suspect, deputies said. The probe into Marquez’s death is continuing and the sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information about her or Alfaro-Rivera to contact Sgt. Terry Kaiser at (831) 755-3772.
