A man in Castroville was arrested by sheriff’s deputies Sunday after a search of his home found narcotics and evidence of cockfighting, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies executed a narcotics search warrant at the home of 31-year-old Simon Valdez in the first block of Springpoint Road in Castroville around 5:25 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office said.
While conducting the search, deputies found about 22 roosters, some dead roosters, several items associated with cockfighting and drugs. Valdez was on felony bail for a prior case in which he was arrested for animal cruelty, according to the sheriff’s office. He is now being held at Monterey County Jail for related charges and is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail. The sheriff’s office will be working with the SPCA for Monterey County to evaluate the remaining dogs, livestock and fowl at Valdez’s home.
