Police arrested an 18-year-old woman after she allegedly stabbed her mother at a home on Twin Oaks Drive in Napa on Sunday morning. The suspect, Shelby Christine Cox, asked police officers to shoot her when she was found walking on nearby Mountain View Circle covered in blood after the stabbing, police Capt. Jeff Troendly said. Police had responded to the mother’s home in the 3300 block of Twin Oaks Drive around 11:45 a.m. after a resident reported seeing his neighbor, 44-year-old Erika Cox, collapse in front of his residence, Troendly said.

Cox had wounds to her chest and back and told her neighbor that her daughter had stabbed her, Troendly said. Police sent a dog into the home where the stabbing occurred because they believed Shelby Cox was still inside, Troendly said. But then another neighbor approached police and said a blood-soaked woman was walking on Mountain View Circle saying she had just killed someone, Troendly said.

When officers contacted Shelby Cox she walked toward them and called out for the officers to shoot her, Troendly said. Cox did not comply with officers’ orders to surrender until she saw the police dog, he said. Shelby Cox had several shallow cuts across her throat and several small puncture wounds on her stomach that were self-inflicted, Troendly said.

The mother and daughter were taken to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center. Shelby Cox was treated and released to police and was then booked into Napa County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, police said. None of Erika Cox’s injuries involved vital organs, and she was also released after being treated at the hospital, Troendly said. J
