A San Francisco man was convicted on Thursday of repeatedly molesting an 8-year-old Daly City girl who San Mateo County prosecutors say he blamed for the abuse, describing her to police as “promiscuous.” Omar Mejia Melendez, 36, was convicted of 24 counts of child molestation by a jury after a seven-day trial in connection with a series of incidents that occurred over a period of at least 18 months, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Melendez was living in the house with the victim and her family during that period and would repeatedly play “games” with the victim that involved touching her breasts, vagina and buttocks, prosecutors said. The victim did not tell anyone about the abuse until she was 12. Melendez, who was arrested on Jan. 1, 2009, told police after his arrest that the girl was promiscuous and that she had thrown herself at him, according to prosecutors. Melendez, who remains in custody in lieu of $6 million bail, is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 16.
