A suspect in a shooting that occurred in the parking lot of a San Leandro apartment complex on Saturday afternoon was arrested in Oakland on Monday after a traffic stop in which a police officer fired a gun, San Leandro police said. At about 1:20 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the 2700 block of San Leandro Boulevard to investigate reports of gunfire heard in the vicinity, police Lt. Luis Torres said.
Arriving officers did not locate any victims, but found evidence consistent with a shooting, including property damage to a nearby building, Torres said. A suspect was seen heading north on San Leandro Boulevard, police said. At about 1:40 p.m. Monday, police spotted a vehicle believed to be associated with the shooting near the intersection of St. Elmo Drive and Stoneford Avenue in Oakland.
Officers pulled the car over, but while they were attempting to make contact with the driver, the suspect brandished a firearm, according to police. A San Leandro police officer, fearing for his safety, fired at least one round, police said. The suspect was not hit by gunfire, but dropped his firearm and attempted to run away, police said. He was taken into custody with the help of a police K-9 unit, police said. Police have not yet released the suspect’s name.
