A man was shot multiple times while driving near the Hilltop Mall in Richmond on Monday evening, a police sergeant said. Officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of Hilltop Mall Road around 6:10 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired and ShotSpotter activation alerts, Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

At least one person had opened fire on a silver SUV, hitting the driver three times, Abetkov said. The shooting caused the driver to lose control of the car, which hit a fire hydrant and then struck a nearby restaurant’s sign, she said. The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for the gunshot wounds, which were not considered life-threatening, she said.

Another man who was in the SUV at the time of the shooting was unharmed. Abetkov said police have not identified any suspects in the shooting and haven’t determined a motive.
