Police arrested a Novato man who threw a rock at the owner of a business in the Del Prado Square shopping center Friday afternoon and later assaulted officers who responded to the incident, a police lieutenant said. Eduardo Alvarez, 20, threw a large rock that broke a window of a business in the 500 block of Alameda Del Prado around 1 p.m., Novato police Lt. Oliver Collins said.

Alvarez fled and two of the three police officers who responded to the incident were injured when Alvarez assaulted them as they tried to detain him, Collins said. One of the officers suffered injuries that were not life threatening and was taken to a hospital. The other officer did not receive immediate medical treatment, Collins said. Alvarez suffered minor cuts and scrapes, Collins said.

He was taken to a hospital before he was booked at the Marin County jail for assault with a deadly weapon, battery on a peace officer, battery causing serious bodily injury, resisting or obstructing and officer and vandalism. Collins said the rock-throwing incident appears to be a random act.
