Investigators are trying to determine who may have been behind the fatal stabbing of a transient man Saturday morning in Castroville, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said. Crews responded to a report that a man had been stabbed just outside the Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, at 11140 Preston St., minutes after 7 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
When crews arrived, they found a man lying near the bathrooms on the east side of the church suffering from stab wounds, sheriff’s officials said. The man, 58-year-old transient Antonio Sanchez Montes, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials. Montes had just returned back to the Castroville area on Friday, according to investigators for the sheriff’s office. The homicide is under investigation.
