A man was arrested Wednesday night after shots were fired from one car to another and one bullet hit an occupied home in Aptos, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. At about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, deputies answered a call in the area of Clubhouse Drive in Aptos by a male driver who said a passenger in a car fired multiple shots at him, sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Ryan Kennedy said.
One of the stray bullets hit a home while people were inside, but no one was injured, Kennedy said. Deputies sent out the victim’s description of the car and the assailant to local law enforcement agencies and Watsonville police spotted the car in Watsonville, Kennedy said. Francisco Rocha, 18, a passenger in the vehicle, was taken into custody on suspicion of shooting out of a vehicle and shooting at an occupied dwelling, both felonies, Kennedy said.
The shooting in the residential neighborhood near state Highway 1 does not appear to be gang related and came after the shooter “greatly overreacted” to something as the victim was driving, Kennedy said. “It was really a poor decision that he made, a road rage kind of incident,” Kennedy said.
