A woman who was fatally stabbed Monday in East Palo Alto has been identified as 47-year-old East Palo Alto resident Philomena Ashford-Anderson, police said. Police have identified Richard Slaughter as a suspect in the homicide. Redwood City police arrested him Monday night at about 9:30 p.m. on an unrelated DUI involving a minor traffic collision, police said. He was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and then booked into the San Mateo County Jail at about 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, police said.
Shortly thereafter, Slaughter provided officers with information on the location of a homicide victim. At about 6 a.m., officers went to an apartment building located at 45 Newell Road to check on the welfare of the tenant based on the information provided by Slaughter, East Palo Alto police Capt. Federico Rocha said. Police found Ashford-Anderson dead inside the residence with multiple stab wounds to her torso, Rocha said.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and the suspect had been dating at the time of the homicide and may have been living together, according to police. Slaughter remains in custody on murder charges, Rocha said.
