Three alleged gang members have been arrested on suspicion of murder in the fatal shooting Saturday of an 18-year-old man near the offices of the main public school district in Salinas, police said. Kristopher Hargrove, 18, Nathaniel Sparks-Musones, 22, and a 17-year-old male were apprehended after fleeing from a stolen car soon after Alfredo Velasco was shot, Salinas police said.
Police were called at around 4:17 p.m. Saturday about a person shot at the intersection of Eucalyptus Drive and Parkway Road across from the Alisal Union School District’s main office, police said. Velasco, who suffered from multiple bullet wounds, later died at a local hospital, police said. Minutes after the shooting, officers pulled over a car about a mile to the west on East Market and Ivy streets, police said.
The car had been reported stolen and matched the description of the vehicle reported seen where Velasco was hit, police said. The three people in the car jumped out and starting running away but officers captured them following an extensive search, police said. All three were arrested initially on suspicion of possessing a stolen car and have since been arrested in Velasco’s murder, police said.
The suspects, who police believe are street gang members, also have been arrested on suspicion of gun possession and gang-related allegations, police said. The homicide was the sixth in Salinas so far in August and the 17th for the year, police said.
