Santa Cruz police have arrested four suspects in connection with a gang-related shooting of a juvenile on Saturday. Police arrested Issac Saavedra, 20, of Watsonville, Marcos Nunez, 27 and Julio Nunez, 25 of Freedom. A 15-year-old boy was also arrested but police have not released his identity, Deputy Chief Steve Clark said. Clark said the four were on Murray Street at Seabright Avenue around 1:30 a.m. and they allegedly shot a 15-year-old juvenile in a vehicle.
The victim was airlifted to a trauma center to be treated for his injuries, according to police. As Santa Cruz police responded to the shooting, officers from the California Highway Patrol attempted to stop a speeding car in the area of Seventh Avenue and Eaton Street, police said. Officers chased the suspects were in the speeding car for 8 miles ending on Clubhouse Drive in Aptos, according to police.
The four suspects fled the vehicle on foot but officers captured two of the four suspects, police said. Police said the remaining two suspects were apprehended hours later, one by a Santa Cruz police K-9. Detectives also served search warrants in the 100 block of Landes Street, 100 block of Carnation Drive and 200 block of Clifford Street, Clark said. The suspects were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and taken to county jail. All four are confirmed Norteno gang members, police said.
