Police arrested a woman in connection with a possibly gang-motivated shooting that injured a 39-year-old man in Watsonville’s Ramsay Park on Wednesday evening. Inez Leal Suarez, 25, of Watsonville, was arrested for attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm from a vehicle and a gang enhancement, police said. Shortly before 6 p.m., a citizen flagged down a police officer near the intersection of Main Street and Auto Center Drive to report that a person had been shot in a nearby park, police said.

The police officer located a man lying down near the entrance of Ramsay Park suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper leg, according to police. The victim was flown to a Bay Area trauma center with life-threatening injuries, according to police. Witnesses gave police a description of the suspect and the suspect vehicle. According to police, witnesses described the suspect as a Hispanic woman with black hair, wearing a white T-shirt.

She was seen driving a vehicle described as possibly a gray Jeep. A short time later, a Watsonville police officer saw a vehicle and driver near the crime scene that matched the suspect description, police said. Police conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and identified Suarez as the driver. Based on witness statements and evidence, Suarez was arrested in connection with the shooting. The incident is being investigated as a gang-motivated crime, police said. Suarez was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail, police said.
