A passenger killed in a suspected DUI crash on Interstate Highway 880 in San Jose on Monday night has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office as 23-year-old Thuan Nguyen. Nguyen, a San Jose resident, was killed when a Honda Civic driven by 23-year-old Henry Lee smashed into a concrete rail on the North Bascom Avenue exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At around 10:40 p.m. Monday, Lee was heading north on Highway 880 when he attempted to exit onto Bascom at an excessive rate of speed, according to the CHP. The Honda hit the rail at the edge of the off-ramp, overturned and then landed on its roof, the CHP reported.

Nguyen appeared to have been partially ejected from the car during the crash, according to the CHP. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined that drug or alcohol intoxication contributed to the accident, and arrested Lee on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, CHP officials said.
