A parolee was shot and killed by police Friday evening after he allegedly fired at an officer who was pursuing him, Salinas police said today. Officers spotted the unnamed man running on the sidewalk in the area of Kern and East Market Streets around 6 p.m. Friday, according to Commander Vincent Maiorana.
The suspect, who was armed with a handgun, ignored orders to stop and drop the gun, and ran into a parking lot near the intersection of Ivy and East Market streets, Maiorana said. The suspect then allegedly fired shots at one pursuing officer, prompting other officers at the scene to fire at him.
The suspect was shot several times and died at the scene, Maiorana said. The suspect, whose identity was not released by police, was identified as a known gang member and parolee who was wanted by state parole, Maiorana said. No officers or members of the public were injured during the shooting and no property damage was reported. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Salinas police.
