A Santa Rosa man was arrested for stealing a transit bus and for possession of narcotics in Novato on Tuesday afternoon, according to police. Richard McAulay, 48, was arrested for vehicle theft, possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, and for being under the influence of a controlled substance, police said. At about 4:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Novato police responded to 1 Golden Gate Place on a report of a stolen Golden Gate Transit bus.
According to police, McAulay stole the bus and drove it away from the bus depot, heading north on U.S. Highway 101. Surrounding law enforcement agencies were provided with a description of the bus and the suspect. The bus was located in Santa Rosa and a Golden Gate Transit official confronted McAulay. McAulay was detained in Santa Rosa without incident and arrested by a Novato police officer.
Upon arrest McAulay was found in possession of suspected heroin and narcotics paraphernalia. He was also suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance, according to police. The stolen bus was returned to Golden Gate Transit officials and McAulay was booked into Marin County Jail, police said.
