A registered sex offender allegedly tried to sexually assault a 26-year-old woman in Santa Cruz early Monday morning, police said. Two women were in the 100 block of Beach Street when Joey Hernandez, 35, allegedly chased after the woman and tried to assault the 26-year-old. The other woman was able to get away and get help. The woman who was attacked fought back and screamed until a group of friends came to the area and chased Hernandez away. Police responded and searched for Hernandez and eventually found him nearby and took him into custody. He was identified as a registered sex offender who was on probation for a 2012 sexual battery incident for inappropriate touching. He had been sentenced to 30 days in jail and 36 months of probation for that case, police said. He has a history of drug-related arrests in Santa Cruz, Watsonville and Capitola, police said. Hernandez is a transient with previous addresses in Watsonville and Santa Cruz.

Anyone with more information about the case is asked to call the Santa Cruz Police Department’s investigations unit at (831) 420-5820.
