An Antioch couple arrested for alleged sexual assault and child cruelty appeared on the charges in a Martinez courtroom this afternoon and are scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday. Johnny Montanez, 38, was charged with six counts of aggravated sexual assault against a child and four counts of child cruelty. He is being held in county jail in Martinez on $6 million bail.

His wife, 38-year-old Carol Montanez, was charged with four counts of child cruelty and is in custody on $250,000 bail. Officers arrested the pair during a traffic stop in Antioch on Tuesday morning following an investigation into allegations of sexual molestation and child endangerment against family members, according to police.

The alleged sex crimes occurred between August 2007 and July 2008, according to Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney Alison Chandler. Johnny Montanez faces up to 150 years to life if convicted as charged, she said. Antioch police continue to investigate the case and are asking anyone with information to call Detective Lopez at (925) 779-6937.
