Deandre Jones died in a drive-by shooting in Newark near Thornton Avenue and Mulberry Street

A man who died in a drive-by shooting in Newark early Saturday morning has been identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau as 22-year-old Deandre Jones. Jones, a Newark resident, was shot along with a 22-year-old Castro Valley man just after 4 a.m. near Thornton Avenue and Mulberry Street, Newark police said. He was hit three times in his upper legs and arm, and the other man was shot in his thigh, according to police. Jones later died at a hospital. The other victim is expected to survive. No arrests have been made in connection with the killing, and police are continuing to investigate the case.
