A Santa Cruz man was arrested Friday in connection with a sexual assault that occurred in the Whispering Pines area of Scotts Valley earlier this month, police said. Jose Roberto Juarez Barranco, 29, was identified as a suspect in the June 19th assault by the victim, who knew him, according to police. The female victim reported that around 10:30 p.m. on June 19th, the suspect allegedly entered the victim’s studio and forcibly began sexually assaulting her, police said.
The victim defended herself and the suspect left. The victim was able to provide a name, photo and vehicle description, police said. Barranco was spotted in Scotts Valley on Oak Creek Boulevard Friday by the same officer who took the initial report and taken into custody. Both the victim and a witness later identified the suspect. Barranco was arrested on suspicion of three felony sexual assault-related offenses and an additional felony, police said.
