Hood County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Sergeant Lance McLean Shot and Killed in Ambush

Sergeant Lance McLean succumbed to a gunshot sustained the previous day while responding to a disturbance call in the Oak Trail Shores community near Lake Granbury.

Sergeant McLean was shot in the back of the head by Ricky Don McCommas, 49, who was supposed to have appeared in court that morning for a hearing related to a pending sexual assault of a child charge. McCommas had shown up at the girl’s home.

Sergeant McLean was the first officer to arrive at the location. McCommas opened fire on Sergeant McLean, striking him in the back of the head. McCommas then fled in a van and proceeded to the Granbury City Hall. As other deputies and officers attempted to stop him he walked towards them and opened fired with a semi-automatic rifle, wounding Granbury Officer Chad Davis before being shot and killed.

Sergeant McLean was flown to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
