A 19-year-old suspect in the shooting last month of a man near a supermarket in Watsonville was arrested Monday night on suspicion of attempted murder, police said. Alex Rugerio, of Watsonville, and another man are suspected of shooting a 29-year-old victim near the Santa Fe Foods market at 133 E. Lake Ave. on May 3, police said. Rugerio on Monday was seen leaving a house on West Beach Street and entering a vehicle driven by another man with a female passenger, police said.

Officers stopped the car on Union Street at East Beach Street at about 9:30 p.m. and found Rugerio had a loaded revolver and some methamphetamine in his possession inside the vehicle, according to police. In addition to attempted murder, police arrested Rugerio on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine and being a member of a criminal street gang. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail, police said.

The other shooting suspect, Edgar Ibarra, is in custody after he was arrested earlier on suspicion of the attempted murder, police said. Watsonville police are asking anyone with details about the shooting to call the department’s crime tip line at (831) 728-3544 or the police investigations bureau at (831) 768-3352.
