A former math teacher was arrested in Gilroy today on suspicion of continuously molesting a female former student since 2011 when the victim was 15 years old, Gilroy police said. Robert William Lincoln, 50, of Capitola, surrendered with his attorney at the Gilroy Police Department at 11 a.m. and was later freed on $200,000 bail, police said.

Police detectives in Gilroy on May 6 began an investigation into a series of alleged sexual molestations of a girl from Gilroy who is now 17. Detectives learned that Lincoln met the victim at the Rancho San Justo Middle School in Hollister when he was her math teacher in 2009.

Lincoln eventually befriended the girl and her family, police said. In 2011, police said that Lincoln started an inappropriate sexual relationship with the girl in Gilroy and Hollister when she was 15 although there is no evidence any of the alleged incidents happened at school.

Police obtained an arrest warrant and took Lincoln in custody on suspicion of five counts related to alleged molestation of a minor, police said. The counts included lewd and lascivious acts on a child 14 or 15 years old, oral copulation with a person under 16 by a person over 21, unlawful intercourse with a minor three years or younger than the perpetrator, a lewd act causing psychological harm and sexual penetration by someone 21 years old with a person under 18, police said.

Kurtz began teaching at the school in August 2007 and was laid off in June 2011 due to budget cuts and enrollment declines and not for disciplinary reason, Hollister School District Assistant Superintendent Dennis Kurtz said.
