Rohnert Park police arrested a Petaluma man this week after he was allegedly seen breaking into a car at a local grocery store. Plainclothes officers were sitting in an unmarked car at the Safeway at 6340 Commerce Blvd. when they saw a suspect park his vehicle next to a car in the parking lot, according to Sgt. Mike Bates. The suspect got out of his vehicle, smashed the window of the parked car, removed a purse and other property and drove away.

The officers followed the suspect, and when he saw that he was being followed the suspect allegedly accelerated to speeds well over 80 mph, Bates said. He then made an abrupt exit across three lanes at Santa Rosa Avenue, where police were able to stop him. Police arrested Petaluma resident John Raymond Ware, 42, on suspicion of burglary and possession of burglary tools, Bates said. All of the victim’s property was recovered.
