A man fatally shot by Concord police who were in Antioch working a drug case Friday night has been identified as Charles Burns, according to the Contra Costa County coroner’s office. Burns, 21, was shot after Concord police say they were conducting surveillance around 9 p.m. at a home in the 2700 block of Barcelona Circle in Antioch.

The Bay Point man was a suspect in a drug sales case at a house that police were attempting to serve a search warrant. While watching the house, Burns allegedly came out and got into a car driven by another 21-year-old Bay Point man. Officers tried to contact Burns to serve the warrant, but the driver of the car allegedly drove off and rammed an occupied police vehicle. Burns allegedly ran from the car, which was when two officers fired and hit him.

According to police, the officers feared for their safety. Police unsuccessfully attempted to revive Burns with life-saving techniques. The driver was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, police said. Antioch and Concord police and the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.
