The Department of Motor Vehicles building in Hayward was shut down for the day after shots were fired in the parking lot this afternoon, a DMV spokesman said. Police were not immediately available to confirm reports that the incident was an officer-involved shooting. DMV spokesman Armando Botello said he was told around 3 p.m. that the DMV building at 150 Jackson St. was closed. Botello said no employees or customers were involved in the incident.
No services will be available at the building until Thursday, Botello said. An employee at Crossroads World Market, located at 230 Jackson St., said at 4:15 p.m. there were police surrounding the area behind the grocery store. He said it smelled as though tear gas had been released. The store was evacuated because of the overwhelming odor. He said a police helicopter overhead was blaring the message, “Come out with your hands up” and that authorities were threatening to release dogs into the area. Magna Avenue is located behind the store and nearby DMV office.
