A 23-year-old man was arrested Monday night in connection with beating a man unconscious after leaving a bar in Belmont early Monday morning, police said. Joseph Kaufman, of San Carlos, was taken into custody after being interviewed by police. Kaufman was identified early in the investigation as a person of interest when police learned that the 48-year-old victim and Kaufman had been at the Lariat Tavern at 1428 El Camino Real prior to the assault.

The two men were later seen arguing outside the tavern after it had closed. The attack was reported on Monday at about 2:45 a.m. on Broadway between Civic Lane and Fifth Avenue, about a block from the bar, according to police. Officers responded and found the victim lying in the street and unconscious. He was transported to a local hospital. His condition has not been released, police said. Kaufman was booked into the San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City for battery with serious bodily injury, according to police.
