Police have released a photo of a man suspected of stealing a woman’s purse at a Sonoma supermarket on Saturday night. The theft happened at the Safeway store at 477 W. Napa St. shortly before 8:30 p.m. The 57-year-old victim said the suspect told her he was going to steal her purse, then tried to yank it from her, Sonoma Police Chief Brett Sackett said. After a brief struggle, the suspect succeeded in getting the purse, and removed her wallet as he ran toward the exit, Sackett said.
A good Samaritan pushed the suspect to the ground just before he reached the exit, and a Safeway employee tackled him, Sackett said. The suspect managed to get away, dropping the wallet and his black Oakland A’s cap during the struggle with the store employee, Sackett said. He fled, running toward Fifth Street West.
Police have released an image of the suspect that was captured by a store surveillance camera. He is described as a white man about 6 feet tall, in his mid- to late 20s, with scraggly facial hair, Sackett said. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a navy-blue sweatshirt, blue jeans, Vans-type black shoes and the black baseball cap.
