A mother and her six-month-old child were nearly hit by gunfire near an East Oakland high school this afternoon, a schools spokesman said. Someone in a car driving by Castlemont High School at 8601 MacArthur Blvd. fired at two students who were walking on the sidewalk at about 2:50 p.m., Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint said. The gunfire missed the students and shot out the rear windshield of a car parked nearby where the mother and her baby were inside, Flint said. No one was hit by the gunfire, and the two intended targets fled into the school along with the mother and her child. The school was placed on lockdown until dismissal at 3:30 p.m., Flint said. Police did not immediately return calls for comment this afternoon.
