Monterey County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who admitted he knowingly left a toddler in his car unattended while he went for a walk Sunday afternoon in Greenfield, sheriff’s officials said. While conducting a check on an illegally parked car near Arroyo Seco Road and Elm Avenue at about 3:50 p.m., sheriff’s deputies noticed a 2-year-old boy inside, officials said. The doors of the car were unlocked and the windows were up, sheriff’s officials said. The boy inside the car appeared to be sweating.

When two adults returned to the car, one of them, Vicente Cortes Palacios, 26, of Salinas, admitted that he convinced the other adult, Maria Maribel Cuevas, 20, of Greenfield, to leave the boy in the car while they walked to the Arroyo Seco River, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies arrested Palacios and towed his car. Medical personnel evaluated the boy and determined he was OK.
