A man was arrested after briefly kidnapping another man and robbing him at gunpoint in Salinas on Friday, police said. Around 4 p.m., a 35-year-old man who had planned to meet a friend at the Home Depot store arrived at the store at 1890 N. Davis Road and called his friend from his cell phone, according to police. While on the phone, the victim was confronted by a suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Alejandro Gonzalez, police said. Police said Gonzalez pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the victim’s head, demanded money and threatened to kill him as the victim’s friend listened on the phone.
The victim handed over a small amount of cash, which angered Gonazalez, who then ordered the victim to get into his truck. Police said the suspect then drove the victim to a more empty part of the parking lot and took some of the victim’s personal property just as the man’s friend arrived on the scene. The suspect approached the friend, pointed his gun and him and ordered him to get into the first victim’s truck. Instead, the friend drove away to safety and Gonzalez fled on foot. The friend drove back around and found the first victim, and the pair saw Gonzalez running into Home Depot, police said. Officers quickly arrived on the scene and spotted Gonzalez, who ran into the store’s warehouse. He was apprehended and arrested on suspicion of robbery, attempted robbery and kidnapping with intent to commit robbery. Officers were able to return the stolen items to the victim.
