A man was shot in his Salinas driveway today and was airlifted to a San Jose trauma center where he remains in critical condition tonight, police said. The shooting was first reported shortly after 3 p.m. when the 34-year-old man was driven to a hospital, police Cmdr. Sheldon Bryan said. He had been shot in the abdomen with a small-caliber handgun and the severity of his wounds led doctors to have him airlifted to a San Jose trauma center after he had been stabilized enough to travel.
Police went back to the man’s home in the 500 block of Sunrise Street and found evidence of the shooting. Police are still trying to determine how the shooting happened, and are working through some conflicting accounts by witnesses, Bryan said. Police resources were stretched thin as officers were also responding to an all-day standoff with a man suspected of beating his children who refused to come out of his home.
