A man under police surveillance was hospitalized after being shot by a police officer in Napa on Tuesday night, police said. Around 8:10 p.m., Napa Special Investigation Bureau agents were conducting surveillance on a car in a parking lot off of Gasser Drive east of Soscol Avenue, police said. Inside the car were three men, including one believed to be wanted on a no-bail warrant for assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

Agents approached the car and held the occupants at gunpoint. One of the men exited the car and an altercation began between him and an agent. During the exchange, the officer opened fire, striking the man in the upper chest, police said. Emergency responders were called to the scene and the man was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa.

Police did not know the man’s condition as of midnight. Police said the Napa police officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, following standard procedure in the event of an officer-involved shooting. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
