Police are seeking charges against two suspects in a barroom brawl Saturday night in downtown Watsonville that resumed outside with one man rendered unconscious and flown to a hospital for treatment, police said. Frank Ibarra, 40, and Benjamin Chavez, 27, are suspected of fighting in the bar of Jalisco’s restaurant at 600 Main St. and then exchanging blows on the sidewalk, Watsonville police said. At about 8 p.m., Ibarra ordered drinks at the restaurant’s bar when Chavez allegedly attacked him from behind and hit him several times in the face and neck, police said.
Ibarra fought back but others quickly broke up the altercation and Chavez, considered the aggressor, was kicked out. After an employee called police, the two men met each other outside and began to fight again, police said. When officers arrived Chavez was lying on the ground and non-responsive to questions and was flown to a hospital for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries.
Officers took a statement from Ibarra and released him later that night. After an investigation, detectives have requested the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office charge Ibarra with felony battery and assault with a deadly weapon and Chavez with misdemeanor battery, police said Thursday. A spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office in Watsonville could not be reached this morning.
