Salinas police are seeking a suspect in the shootings Wednesday night of two male teens identified by police as members of a street gang, a police spokesman said today. The two victims, ages 17 and 18, were shot while standing near a catering truck in the 200 block of Kern Street at about 7 p.m., police Commander Sheldon Bryan said.
The case is being investigated as gang-related because both victims “are known to us as gang members,” Bryan said. The 18-year-old was treated and released from a local hospital while the 17-year-old was airlifted to a hospital in San Jose with a wound to his upper leg and hip but is expected to survive, Bryan said.
The suspected shooter is described as an African-American male with dreadlocks who may have been accompanied by an African-American male adult described as heavy-set, he said. Both fled the scene inside a champagne-colored SUV, he said.
