A man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly attempting to sexually assault a teenage girl near a Fremont middle school, police said. At about 3:15 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a report of an attempted sexual assault in the area of Sundale Drive and Nelson Street, about a block from G.M. Walters Junior High School and a couple of blocks from John F. Kennedy High School. A girl told the officers that she had seen a man approach a teenage girl from behind and lift up her skirt, according to police. School resource officers assisted with the investigation and were able to locate the 17-year-old victim, who gave police more information.
Investigators identified the suspect as 28-year-old Marcos Pereda, a registered sex offender who lives nearby, Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said. Officers went to Pereda’s home on Tuesday and arrested him on suspicion of attempted sexual assault. Pereda was on probation at the time of his arrest for previous incidents in Fremont involving a lewd act in public and indecent exposure, Bosques said. According to jail records, he was booked into the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and was being held on $25,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned at the Fremont Hall of Justice this afternoon.
