Santa Rosa police today arrested a man suspected of stealing mail in the Fountaingrove area, a police sergeant said. David Winston, 46, of Santa Rosa, was arrested after an officer stopped him for driving his 1999 Audi through a stop sign in the area of Chanate Road and Fountaingrove Parkway around 3:30 a.m., Sgt. Mike Lazzarini said.
The officer determined Winston was on probation for theft related crimes, and mail that had just been stolen from several homes on Kendell Hill Drive and Hadley Hill Road in the Fountaingrove area was found in his car, Lazzarini said. Winston also was in possession of a window punch, a device typically used to break into vehicles, and of drug paraphernalia, Lazzarini said.
Mail and vehicle thefts and vehicle and residential burglaries have increased in the Fountaingrove area in the past three months, Lazzarini said. Winston was arrested on felony charges of possession of stolen property, probation violations and committing a felony while out on bail, and on misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of burglary tools. Winston was out on bail for an auto theft in December, Lazzarini said.
