A deputy sheriff fatally shot a kidnapping suspect following a vehicle pursuit in an unincorporated area of Sonoma County near Guerneville late Thursday night. At 10:47 p.m., sheriff’s deputies received a call from the San Rafael Police Department regarding an in progress kidnapping. According to sheriff’s deputies, the kidnapping victim was able to send a text by cell phone to a friend. The friend received the text and contacted San Rafael police, who relayed the information to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.
A vehicle description was relayed to sheriff’s deputies, who spotted the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on Guerneville Road in Santa Rosa. The suspect failed to yield and a police pursuit ensued as the suspect continued westbound on Guerneville Road. Deputies laid spike strips on the roadway to immobilize the vehicle at two separate locations, but the suspect was able to evade them, deputies said.
Shortly after 11:20 p.m., the suspect lost control of the vehicle and struck an embankment. Deputies found the victim uninjured, deputies said. In the course of the arrest a sheriff’s deputy fatally shot the suspect, deputies said. According to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, the Sonoma County Law Enforcement Employee-Involved Fatal Incident Protocol has been invoked. The Santa Rosa Police Department and the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office will be further investigating the incident.
