Two carjacking suspects fleeing from police crashed a stolen Mercedes into several parked cars at a Union City shopping center on Sunday, injuring one person, police said. The vehicle was taken around 12:45 p.m. from the Mission San Jose area of Fremont, and was last seen on Curtner Road heading toward Mission Boulevard. An officer spotted the gold Mercedes traveling north on Interstate Highway 880 and followed it to the Lowes store at the Union Landing Shopping Center, police said.
Outside the shopping center, the Mercedes crashed into several parked cars, injuring one woman who was inside a vehicle, according to police. The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. The driver and passenger both exited the Mercedes and ran into the shopping center. Officers were able to quickly capture the driver, an 18-year-old Oakland woman whose name has not been released, police said.
The second suspect, identified by police as Cornelilus Smith, 18, was taken into custody a short time later after witnesses inside the shopping center helped police locate him. Both were arrested on suspicion of felony carjacking, and the woman was also arrested for hit-and-run, police said.
