A man who was fatally shot outside a high school in Watsonville Friday evening has been identified as 18-year-old Marco Ortega, of Watsonville, police said. Police are investigating the killing as a gang-related crime, however, the exact motive of the shooting is unknown, according to police. Ortega was an associate of a local street gang, according to police.
Officers responded to a report that Ortega had arrived in the emergency room at Watsonville Community Hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds at about 7:55 p.m. Friday Ortega was shot multiple times in his upper body, according to police. Police arrived at the hospital and spoke with Ortega and witnesses. Officers were able to determine that Ortega had been in a parking lot outside Watsonville High School, located at 250 E. Beach St., when he was confronted by at least two male suspects, according to police.
The suspects fled the scene after shooting Ortega, according to police. Ortega was then transported to the hospital in a private vehicle, police said. After giving a statement to police, Ortega died from his injuries, police said.
