A San Jose High School student stabbed to death near the campus Wednesday was identified as 17-year-old Anthony Daniel Santa Cruz, the San Jose Police Department said today. Police responded to a call at about 3:14 p.m. about a stabbing in the area of North 21st and Julian streets a block west of the high school shortly after classes got out, police said. Officers found Santa Cruz lying on the ground suffering from a stab wound. He was pronounced dead at 3:29 p.m. A preliminary investigation found that Santa Cruz had been involved with an altercation with at least two suspects that ended in the stabbing, police said. The suspects fled the scene, police said. Homicide detectives believe the stabbing was gang-related.
