A 16-year-old boy was killed and another wounded in a double shooting in Pittsburg Monday night that stemmed from a fight earlier that day, a police lieutenant said. Officers responded around 7:45 p.m. to reports of a shooting in the 100 block of West Eighth Street and located two males suffering from gunshot wounds, Lt. Ron Raman said. The victims, both 16-year-olds from Pittsburg, were taken to a hospital for treatment.

One of the boys, who was shot in the back, died from his injuries, Raman said. His name is being withheld as authorities notify relatives. The other victim is expected to survive. After working through the night and conducting numerous interviews, detectives were able to identify a suspect in the shooting — a 23-year-old man who is on felony probation, according to Raman.

With the help of a SWAT team, police arrested the suspect at his Pittsburg home in the 300 block of West 11th Street this morning. He was booked into county jail, where he is being held on $1 million bail. Raman did not release the suspect’s name but said he has an extensive criminal history and apparently shot the two 16-year-olds after getting into a physical fight with them several hours earlier. The lieutenant said the suspect and victims lived in the same area of Pittsburg, but it is unclear how they knew one another.
