A suspect was arrested Thursday night in Salinas following a vehicle and foot pursuit that ended in a residential backyard, police said. The pursuit occurred after shots were heard in the area of Linwood Drive and Chaparral Street shortly before midnight, according to police. Officers in the area spotted a blue Chevy Suburban speeding and attempted to stop it, but the vehicle fled.
Police pursued the suspect vehicle through residential neighborhoods in North Salinas for around five minutes before the Suburban crashed into a parked car on the in the vicinity of Julia and Christensen avenues, police said. The driver fled on foot, and ran through several backyards with officers in pursuit, police said.
The suspect was eventually found hiding under a mattress, according to police. A search of the suspect’s vehicle located a loaded 9 mm Glock, which police determined to have been stolen in a residential burglary in 2002. Police arrested the suspect, Henry Lechuga, 22, on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon, evading a police officer and a parole violation.
