A Fresno man who was arrested Friday for a 28-year-old homicide case was in court Monday and has a plea date set, a Santa Clara County deputy district attorney said. Daniel Garcia, 53, who was arrested on Friday and charged with the killing of Saba Girmai, waived time and will enter a plea on Feb. 5 at 9 a.m. in Department 84, Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Ted Kajani said. On Jan. 18, 1985, Girmai’s body was found in the dumpster in the rear of the Bailey Park Plaza and Safeway shopping center at 570 N. Shoreline Blvd. in Mountain View, police said.
Girmai, 21, was known to frequent the San Jose area, police said. The investigation was frequently revisited throughout the years but no significant leads developed, police said. On Jan. 12, 2010, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s crime lab was able to develop a DNA profile from the victim’s fingernails, which gave authorities a match. Garcia, a previously convicted offender, was matched to the DNA, police said. He was not previously linked to Girmai.
