A man was injured in a shooting in Salinas on Thursday night, police said today. The shooting was reported around 8:10 p.m. near the intersection of Cortez Street and Mae Avenue. The 20-year-old victim was walking south on Mae Avenue when a minivan drove past him. The vehicle then stopped and two male suspects got out and asked the victim if he was a gang member, according to police. The victim did not respond and continued walking. At that point, one of the suspects fired several rounds, striking the victim in the lower back, police said.
The suspects fled and had not been found as of this morning. The shooting suspect was described only as wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood tied tightly around his face. No other suspect or vehicle description was given, police said. The victim was flown to a Bay Area hospital for treatment of his injuries and is expected to survive, according to police.
