A teenage boy shot and killed a 15-year-old girl and injured a 14-year-old boy this afternoon as they walked on Lion Way near 66th Avenue, according to Oakland police. The victims were walking with a group of friends and family members on the 6600 block of Lion Way today around 3:40 p.m. when the fatal shooting occurred, according to police spokeswoman Johnna Watson. A lone suspect, described as a 13 to 16 year old African American male armed with a handgun, approached the group on foot and allegedly starting firing into the crowd, Watson said. Two shots struck the juvenile victims, killing the girl and sending the 14-year-old boy to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Watson said.
The suspect, who may have been wearing a red t-shirt, fled the area on foot and has not been detained. Watson said investigators are interviewing witnesses now and trying to determine the motive in the shooting. The relationship between the victims remains unclear but Watson noted that the group that was fired at consisted of family members and some friends. “This was a group, a mother and juveniles, all out walking and just enjoying the day,” Watson said.
