A Richmond man shot by police on Thursday as he allegedly assaulted a woman remains in critical condition today, El Cerrito police said today. Michael Christopher Johnson, 48, was shot after police received a report of a man and a woman involved in an argument around 6:40 p.m., according to El Cerrito police. Callers said the woman was calling for help, and witnesses on the scene pointed police to an area behind the Chevron gas station at San Pablo and Potrero avenues, police said.

Officers arriving on the scene saw Johnson allegedly striking a woman on the head with a pistol, police said. Johnson allegedly ignored orders to stop the attack, and pointed his gun at the woman, prompting the two officers to open fire. Johnson was taken to the hospital, where he remains in custody in critical condition, police said today. The victim, a woman who police learned was in a long-term relationship with Johnson, suffered head injuries.

She was treated and released Thursday evening, police said. Police plan to seek charges against Johnson including domestic battery, assault with a deadly weapon, illegal gun possession and attempted murder, police said today. The officers involved in the shooting have eight years of combined law enforcement experience, police said.
