A 9-year-old girl who was riding a bicycle she got for Christmas was injured when a car hit her in Salinas today, but the story has a happy ending, according to the Salinas Police Department. The girl was riding her new bike in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 700 block of Elkington Street at about 11:30 a.m. when she rode out of the lot and into the path of an oncoming vehicle, police said.

Angel Garcia, 37, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck at the speed limit and was unable to stop in time to miss the girl, police said. The girl suffered a broken leg in the accident, which could have been much worse had she not been wearing a safety helmet, police said. The impact of the collision broke out the truck’s front grill and the girl’s head left a dent in the hood of the vehicle, police said.

Emergency medical personnel called to the scene told police that the helmet likely helped save the girl from major head trauma. The Salinas Police Officers Association purchased a new bicycle and helmet for the girl and delivered them to her home, police said. Garcia was not cited in the accident, police said.
